Youth Art Month
Up Through Saturday, April 5, 2008
Youth Art Month is an annual observance in March to emphasize the value of art education for all children. Curated by Barbara Sankovich, this exhibition features work by student artists enrolled in regional public and private art programs. Over 100 works of art are on display, representing over 25 area schools, with various forms of media. For more information, call 540/667-5166.

“Dwelling in the Backcountry”

Opening Reception Sunday, April 13, 1 - 4 pm
The Shenandoah Arts Council is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Barry Vance, entitled “Dwelling in the Backcountry.” Each of the twenty-four paintings in the exhibit is accompanied by a passage selected by the artist from literature, poetry, music, or historical journeys. The text appearing beside the paintings will be familiar, including Willa Cather, Louise McNeill, Wendell Berry, Thomas Jefferson, Donald McCaig, and Madeline MacNeil. This exhibit is free and open to the public, and runs April 13 – May 17. Madeline MacNeil will provide music on the hammer dulcimer during the opening reception. Nominations Sought for Governor’s Awards for the Arts
May 15 deadline
Nominations are now being sought for the Governor’s Awards for the Arts 2008 which will be presented by Governor Timothy M. Kaine in September. The Awards, which have been presented only three times in Virginia, recognize outstanding lifetime achievement by Virginia artists, arts organizations and those who support and encourage the arts.  Nominations may be made by anyone in the Commonwealth and must be sent or emailed to the Virginia Commission for the Arts no later than May 15, 2008. Free Summer Scholarship Opportunities

2008 Summer Regional Governor’s School Program

Performing and Visual Arts, Northwest (PAVAN) is now accepting applications for the 2008 Summer Regional Governor’s School program. This program is free to all qualified applicants. The program will offer rising 9th-12th graders a two week intensive study in their choice of theatre, dance, guitar, instrumental jazz band, vocal music or the visual arts. The program will be held July 17-18, 2008 at Millbrook High School in Frederick County. Non-residential program, meeting 9 am – 2:30 pm daily, with no weekend classes. Application deadline is March 21. Auditions will be held April 5 and 6 at Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy. Application is available at http://www.su.edu/pavan.
