Making Marks: Relief Printmaking

Curious about printmaking? Join Artist and Professor Monica Lynn James for a fun, hands-on relief print workshop designed for both beginners and experienced artists. Through guided demos and open experimentation, you’ll learn the relief print process and see how an image comes to life in ink. Participants will design, carve, and print a small relief artwork to take home. Whether you’re new to printmaking or an experienced artist, this workshop offers something meaningful for every level.​​​

Photo Encaustic
with Linda Lopez

This three-hour workshop will help build your confidence in the safe handling of molten wax. Sample boards will be provided. You will learn how to use different heating
elements, such as a heat gun, embossing tool, and three varieties of torches. Any or all can be used to heat the wax, so whatever you are comfortable using is fine. In
addition to the sample boards you worked on, you will take home two completed 8”x 10” birch panels.​​

Reclaimed Frame

This workshop introduces participants to the basics of refinishing a wooden frame. Participants will learn simple techniques for cleaning, sanding, repairing, and applying a new finish to restore and refresh a worn wooden frame. By the end of the workshop, students will leave with a beautifully refinished piece and practical skills they can use at home.​​​

Animal Reduction Relief Prints

Students begin with an animal of their choice and create a relief reduction print focused specifically on the patterns across the animal’s body. Rather than illustrating the full animal in detail, the emphasis is on translating surface structure—fur, feather, scale, markings, and value shifts—into simplified, intentional relief carving.

Beginner Crochet
with CM Smelser

Learn the basics of crochet and put them to work in a versatile staple: granny squares!
In this class, participants will learn the basic stitches used in classic granny squares, how to read a crochet chart, and how to seam their granny squares together using single crochet. By the end of class, they should have a small bag made with two multi-colored granny squares.

Reduction through Relief
with Monica James

Intermediate to Advanced
​
Students distill a complex subject (object, figure, or photograph) into a highly reduced relief print that prioritizes structure, value hierarchy, and essential form.
This is about subtraction as decision-making.

Workshop & Class Terms & Conditions
Registration ends three days prior to class dates.
​
Workshops are Saturdays from 9 am to 12 pm unless otherwise noted.
​
Cancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.
​
Refund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three-business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.
