Photo Encaustic: Where Photographs Meet Hot Beeswax, Pigments, Texture and Creativity!

This three-hour workshop will help build your confidence in the safe handling of molten wax. Sample boards will be provided. You will learn how to use different heating
elements, such as a heat gun, embossing tool, and three varieties of torches. Any or all can be used to heat the wax, so whatever you are comfortable using is fine.

In addition to the sample boards you worked on, you will take home two completed 8”x 10” birch panels.

Please ensure the photos you choose are not too dark. If a misty effect is what you are after, then a darker image is ok. I request that you send me your photos so I can help
you determine which will be the best to use, as I will be printing one on rice paper and the other on watercolor paper.

$25 materials fee due day of workshop.

Feel free to bring a snack or drinks.

The workshop will include the following:

  • Types of equipment – minimum supplies needed to get started

  • Wax and Fire safety – how to safely work with wax, ventilation, and best practices when working with a torch.

  • Two ways to mount a photo to your surface.

  • Adding color to your wax with Oils, India Ink, Oil Pastel, Pan Pastel.

  • Cleaning your materials and work surface

  • Textural techniques, such as accretion, incising, and collage.

Meet Your Instructor: Linda Lopez

As an encaustic artist, Linda Lopez finds inspiration in the ever-changing landscapes of nature. She took an encaustic class 8 years ago and now uses this medium to express her artistic voice. Linda uses the unique properties of melted wax and artist mediums such as oils, pastels, and ink to create dynamic layers. Each layer of wax is fused with a heating element such as a torch or heat gun. Linda's work reflects her connection to the natural world, where the interplay of colors, transparency, and textures echoes the beauty and complexity of the landscape and nature. Linda also uses the encaustic medium with her photography to create captivating mixed media pieces. She aims to develop a sense of tranquility and contemplation through her encaustic works of art.

Linda is a member of the International Encaustic Artists (IEA). She was previously a member of the IEA chapter Florida Wax group and maintained a presence at the Hub Gallery in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Linda additionally showed her work individually with the Florida Wax group at the Galerie Elan in Daytona Beach, Florida, Art Lofts in St. Pete, Florida, and the Art Ovation Hotel in Sarasota Florida.
