About this Workshop:
Turn your favorite recipes into illustrated stories in this fun and engaging Recipe Comic Workshop led by award-winning author and illustrator Robin Ha.
Blending storytelling, drawing, and food, this hands-on class invites participants to transform a beloved recipe— whether it’s a family dish, a comfort meal, or even instant noodles— into a comic-style visual narrative.
Inspired by Robin’s signature approach seen in her bestselling books like Cook Korean!: A Comic Book With Recipes and her upcoming Instant Noodles and Beyond, this workshop makes the art of cooking accessible, playful, and deeply personal. Through step-by-step guidance, Robin will share how to break down a recipe into visual sequences, combine text and imagery, and bring humor, memory, and creativity into every panel.
No prior drawing or cooking experience is required— just come ready to experiment, tell a story, and have fun. Perfect for beginners, comic lovers, food enthusiasts, and anyone curious about creative storytelling, this workshop celebrates the joy of making something both delicious and expressive.
Participants should bring a recipe they would like to work on during the class.
Participants will leave with their own completed (or in-progress) recipe comic and a fresh perspective on how art and everyday life can come together in unexpected and delightful ways.
Students will need to bring:
- A recipe they want to work on during the class
- Pencils and erasers
- Loose papers and sticky notes
- Scissors and rulers
- Any inking tools (pens) they prefer to use

Meet Your Instructor: Robin Ha
Robin Ha (She/her) is the award-winning author/illustrator of the graphic novel memoir Almost American Girl. At fourteen she moved to the United States from Seoul, Korea. Her comics and illustrations have appeared in various publications, including the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times, as well as in anthologies highlighting Asian American culture, including Rise: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now, New Frontiers: The Many Worlds of George Takei, and Shattered: The Asian American Comics Anthology (Secret Identities). She is also the author of the best-selling comic recipe book Cook Korean!: A Comic Book With Recipes. Her new graphic novel, The Fox Maidens was published by Balzer and Bray in February 2024.
Robin draws from her years of experience working in the comics industry as well as her training in illustration (Rhode Island School of Design, 2004) to teach visual storytelling.
She strives to find a balance between teaching conceptual and practical ways of making comics so the students can take the knowledge gained from her class and apply it in the real world.

This project was supported, in part, by the Virginia Commission for the Arts, which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly.
